Optimizations for mobile users

7/21/2016

Browsing through the website used to be a total pain. Unreadable text, broken links, et cetera.
Today, I've gone through most of the site and fixed what I could, so mobile users will generally see a cleaner & better site now.

There are still minor color inconsistencies, but that shouldn't bother anyone, I think.

Website Tweaks (again!)

7/20/2016

Recently my website has seen an increase in visitors. I cannot stress this enough how happy it makes me that people are visiting my website, I honestly am happy and I thank you all.

However, some visitors have reported that the website looks messy in some areas and get confused over certain pages.

As such - the sub-page "Updates" in "My Open Hexagon Packs" has been renamed to "Update History" instead and the sub-page "Community Updates" in "Community Packs" has been renamed to "Community Pack Update History".

I've also cleaned up the Developer Trivia page and ironed out some minor quirks that many have reported.

Hope this website looks cleaner now!

Changing the comment system

7/18/2016

Since the Disqus comment system never fixed itself and kept failing to load, even after a whole 2 months have passed, I've decided to completely change the comment system altogether.
Now comments are gonna be hosted in-house by Weebly, which seem to work just as well as the old Disqus system, if not - better.

Glad I got that out of the way at least, even though no one used it. A nice novelty to have, no?

Taking the third party modding forum down

7/18/2016

After thinking about it for a while with a clearer head, I've realized that the third party modding forum was a bad idea, in many ways.

For one, no one would be motivated enough to post there, since there is no reward for posting there. Even if you were to mod a map there like crazy, you wouldn't get any reward out of it there, nor would you be able to submit your beatmap for ranking, since none of the official osu! BNs or staff were involved in any way.

Second of all, it'd all have to be manual. Unlike official osu!, where you click on a timestamp to immediately jump there, alongside with what the modder selected for the mod, on this forum - you'd have to do everything manually.

There were many other reasons as well, but those are the two primary reasons. As such - the third party modding forum has been officially taken down and can no longer be accessed.

But then you ask - how will I take mods for future maps? Simply put - I won't. I cannot submit any of them to official osu! to have an official thread there nor do I think I have any modder friends to do private modding for me on Discord or Steam chats anyway. Nothing I can really do, if I finish a map - it'll just be submitted here without a modding thread.

Third party forum for taking osu! beatmap mods is now up!

7/16/2016

Careful debating lead up to this, but I figured there's no other way to go about this.
I present to you - a third party forum for taking mods on osu! beatmaps!
http://vert-maps.boards.net/

Please read the FAQ thread on the forum before doing anything on that site ever.
But yes, everyone is free to post there - you do not need an account! (unless you are making threads for your own maps)

I am not expecting that to succeed at all, but for now - it's a compromise I'll have to deal with.
I will also slightly tweak the website in favor of that forum's creation as well.

Website tweaks and regarding osu! beatmap modding

7/15/2016

I have made some overall tweaks to the website, such as removing the "Early Access" page entirely and moving its contents to My Open Hexagon Packs and overall information updates. That kind of thing is small, but I want to talk about something bigger.

Since I am starting to host my own osu! beatmaps here on my site, I thought about continuing to update my maps that I'm still working on, maps like furioso melodia and the remap of Kami Jigen! Fortune Material. And while I will continue to do a lot of self-modding for those maps and publish them, sure, the problem comes in with taking mods for those maps.

Weebly used to have a "Forum" feature, meaning I could host a simple forum here on the site. And in 2014 this was a thing. Really really early visitors will remember a sort of forum that I used to have for this site, which consisted of nothing but it was an attempt to get some community feedback for my Open Hexagon packs.

Now that Weebly has removed the forum feature from their editor (rightfully so, because I remember it being incredibly limiting and quite shit) - I don't know what to do.
I do want to take mods again, yes, but the problem is how?

Some would say I could do it through the official osu! forums. While I can't post there, modders can. And you would be right, it'd be way more convenient for modders to post there in general and then me updating the map(s) here. However, know that whenever I run osu!, I am always on Ripple - a private osu! server for restricted players. This means I cannot view the osu! forums while I am on osu! itself, making modding literally impossible for me.

Why not just log out of Ripple and do it through official osu! while taking mods?
I can only do that with maps that are currently submitted. If I finish a new map I worked on for a while, I won't be able to submit it to official osu! to take mods from there, making this thing way more inconvenient than it should be.

Another problem is if other restricted/banned osu! players want to mod my maps. They are pretty much in the same boat as me, meaning they cannot post their mods on the official osu! threads either. And I want every osu! mapper, banned or not, to help me mod my maps. I want this to be open for everyone, not just to people who aren't banned.

So I am currently out of ideas. I want to take mods for my maps, yes, but since Weebly removed their, admittedly shitty forum system, I don't know what to do.
I could start a third-party ProBoards forum, yes, since they give a lot more customizability, but...well, I don't know, I'll have to think about this for a while.

But for now, guess I'll self-mod for a while.

Finally expanding!

7/14/2016

Dear visitors, I am proud to announce that SHfOH is finally expanding into osu!
Starting July 14th, 2016 - I will now post my future osu! beatmaps here on this site!
For more questions why - please visit the site's F.A.Q.

But I am happy enough to give this site some purpose again. Expect to see beatmaps posted here soon!
I've only begun work on the osu! beatmaps page, so it's not exactly finished yet, but I'll get to it when I'll have more time.

That's all for now, stay tuned!

Changing the contact email address

7/14/2016

Due to an increased amount of unwanted, unnecessary spam, because I linked the contact form to my actual email address, I was forced to create a brand new email account specifically for this website.

Now users who will send a level pack or anything else will no longer be emailing my actual email address and instead will be emailing this website's specific email address as well, which is [email protected]

This will also be the email address linked as a hotlink up in the website's header for contacting me regarding the website and general inquiries.

That is all.

2 year anniversarry!

6/20/2016

2 years ago today - this website launched for the very first time, alongside the SHfOH level pack for Open Hexagon.
People don't lie when they say that time flies fast, but it sure as hell flew by me. Another year, another day, it's easy to take for granted the time you've spent and the time you have. But those last 2 years were special.

Thank you.
Happy 2 years to us!

Blog comments are broken

6/6/2016

Hello all of you 3 visitors per year out there.
Just letting you know that the blog comments (that are powered by Disqus) are broken and I have no idea what's wrong, nor how to fix this.
Perhaps this'll fix itself soon, but just letting you know that the comment section nobody uses is broken. What joy!
